Competing in a pageant can be both fun and stressful. Some of the stress can come from trying to
figure out how to pay for all of the pageant related expenses. The expenses of registration fees,
pageant coaches, wardrobe, accessories, hair, makeup, transportation, and accommodations can
be quite overwhelming financially. The one question that goes through the minds of parents and
contestants is how will I pay for this pageant? Some may think, “I can just charge everything to
my credit card.” Sorry, Wrong Answer! Yes, I said it. You can get mad at me all you want, but I
will not change my answer. I don’t believe in going into debt for a pageant because it is not a
financially smart decision. Debt keeps people in bondage, and why would you want those
expenses to follow you once the pageant is over? I don’t know about you, but I am not about that
life.

I know pageants can be rather expensive but with time and preparation, you can save up and pay
for a pageant in no time. I believe that it is important for contestants and their families to be
financially savvy when preparing to compete in a pageant. Pageantry is an expensive hobby, and
you should never let a hobby bankrupt you. Now, would you believe me if I told you I can show
you 5 innovative ways to pay for your pageant so you don’t stress out your bank account? If so,
keep reading.

  1. Work in the Experential Marketing Industry

  2. Have you ever been to a sporting event where someone gave you a free t-shirt in exchange for
completing a survey? Have you ever been to a grocery store and received a free sample? If you
answered yes to either question, then you have participated in experiential marketing.
Experiential marketing is a form of advertising that helps consumers experience a brand in a
unique way. The individuals who work in experiential marketing are referred to as brand
ambassadors. Brand ambassadors are friendly, outgoing people you see at music festivals,
tradeshows, grocery stores, and sporting events that hand out and demonstrate products. They are
essentially the face of the brand. Staffing agencies hire brand ambassadors to perform the work
of the client. The experiential marketing industry is very lucrative, and you can make anywhere
between $15.00 to $50.00 an hour working these fun events. I have made anywhere from
$500.00-$900.00 a month working as a brand ambassador.

  3. Become A Mystery Shopper

  4. Mystery Shopping is also a great way to earn cash. You can get paid for providing your opinion on restaurants, apartment complexes, car dealerships, and a variety of stores that you patronize on a regular basis. Make sure you do your research, and only work for legitimate companies because scams do exist. The Mystery Shopping Providers Association is a great place to start when you are searching for companies. Some examples of legitimate mystery shopping companies are Market Force and Second-To-None.

  5. Become A Theatre Checker

  6. How would you like to get paid to watch movie trailers or count 3-D sunglasses? Well, that is exactly the job description of a theatre checker. You can make anywhere between $7.00-$10.00 per assignment. That may not seem much, but it adds up over time. Marketforce is a company that offers theatre checker assignments.
  7. Save Your Loose Change

  8. All of us have change in our purses or pockets. Get a clear jar and throw that loose change in there. You will be surprised how much change you can accumulate over an extended period of time. Set a goal for yourself to see how much change you can collect in 30 days or 60 days. REMEMBER: NO DIPPING INTO THE CHANGE JAR TO SATISFY YOUR CHICK FIL A or STARBUCKS HABIT. This change has a specific purpose.

  9. Create A Side Business

  10. What is something that you love to do? Makeup? Writing? Baking? Photography? Why not turn that passion into profit. You already love to do it so why not make some money in the process? I personally do not know how to do my own makeup so I would rather pay a makeup artist to do it for me. I get a flawless makeup application that is stage ready, and the makeup artist gets the joy of working his or her passion and getting paid at the same time. I call that a win-win situation. Start putting a price tag on your services.

I know these suggestions may make take you out of your comfort zone, but you must do different things in order to generate different results. Sacrifice and discipline are necessary when you are working towards the goal of paying for a pageant. These innovative ways can and will work if you put in the time and effort.

"Dumplin" is a Netflix Original film released late last year that follows the story of Willowdean aka Dumplin ( the embarrassing nickname her mom calls her). She is a plus-sized sixteen-year-old in a small southern town struggling with fitting in, self-esteem and the pressure of being the daughter of a former beauty queen.

Her mother "Rosie" played by Jennifer Aniston, is still living in the glory of her  old pageant days and spends most of her time consumed with directing the community's annual Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant that her daughter decides to compete in as a form of revenge.

Willowdean gathers a group of unlikey girls to compete in her mothers pageant as a form of defiance. A short haired lesbian, a plus-sized church going teen, her best friend who hated pageants as much as she did (or so she thought) and herself forming the perfect bunch to upset her mothers perfect pageant.

This film explores the pressure of perfection in pageants, and the pressure young girls face with self-image.

I don't want to give away the ending, because it is a film that is definitely worth watching and there are many lessons to be taken away from this movie.

On May 2nd, Cheslie Kryst, a 28-year-old Attorney from  North Carolina won the Miss USA pageant, live on FOX in Reno Nevada! Kryst competed again 50 other contestants in evening gown, swimsuit, and interview competitions.

She shined on stage in a simple but elegant white Sherri Hill evening gown, which was a perfect pairing with her show-stopping natural curly hair.

Kryst graduated with honors from the University of South Carolina and obtained her law degree and MBA from Wake Forest University. She is currently part of the Poyner Spruill litigation team focusing on government and business-related disputes  and constitutional litigation.

She is proving that beauty queens can be both brains and beauty.

Kryst, is not only making history as an Attorney winning Miss USA but as one of three black woman winning major national pageants all during the same year.  Miss America (Nia Franklin), Miss Teen USA (Kaleigh Garris)  and the current Miss USA (Cheslie Kryst) spoke with CBS This Morning about this amazing moment.

""It's symbolic, I think, and it sends a message across the world really that you can be anything you want to be, and there doesn't have to be just one of us at a time up here," Nia Franklin said.

This win was huge for so many reasons and it is a message about diversity that is needed more than ever right now.

It’s that time of year again...Halloween! The one day when its acceptable to walk around dressed up as your favorite character, celebrity, imaginary creature or pretty much anything your creative mind can come up with. With huge success of major film releases based on comics and television shows (like Black Panther, The Avengers, and Black Lightning) it can be anticipated that there will be a flood of comic book characters this Halloween as you scroll through social media.

Here are a few costume ideas to get you started. (F.Y.I costumers don’t come with actual powers)!

Shuri, the young intelligent tech savy sister of Black Panther quickly became a fan favorite for girls comic book fans everywhere once the film was released. Her wit and her smarts gave a fresh representation for comic book film characters in 2018. Although this character is new, you can be sure characters from the film Black Panther will be a popular choice this Halloween.

Fashion Nova $49.98

Wonder Woman is always a female costume favorite during Halloween. If you are looking for a easy comic book hero costume, this is always a safe bet. In addition thanks to YouTube tutorials, if you don't want to actually purchase a costume, there are tons of Halloween makeup tutorials that will help you achieve the Wonder Woman look that will leave you looking ready to take on the world.

Thunder, the oldest daughter of Black Lightning and part of the super hero dup saving the town of Freeland costume is to die for! The CW show "Black Lightning" is already in season 2 and if you haven't watched an episode yet, where have you been ? Anissa aka Thunder is fighting crime, bad guys and working to save her community and not to mention has a DOPE costume. This costume is pretty hard to track down but, with a form fitting black one piece and some creativity,  this costume will be a show stopper at any party.

Poison Ivy, the mean green red headed sultry character is a daring and colorful option if you are looking for a more bold costume this Halloween. There are many ways to pull off this character and a great D.I.Y project to make it your own. A bright red wig is a must to pull off this costume and bring Poison Ivy to life.  (Poison ivy costume on right: IG@sarahlahbati)

Black Widow! Whether or not shes your favorite Avenger, her uniform screams bold, tough, sassy and a touch of sexy. Since this costume is all black its easy to make a D.I.Y version. You probably have most of the items already in your closet. All you would need is a leather jacket, black faux leather leggings, combat boots and black leather gloves.  You can easily find a holster, shield and a red wig for the perfect finishing touch.

Supergirl,  A classic costume , whether you're 5 or 25.
You can pretty much find a Superman shirt anywhere , pair it with a red skirt and some red thigh high boots (which may be harder to find) or red heels, a red cape and you will be ready to save the universe.

There are so many great comic book characters to choose from for Halloween and what better excuse to dress up and play pretend for a day. This list included female heros but, of course us ladies are not confined to only dressing up as female characters. Any male comic book character (hero or villain) can be a created to look as girly or sexy as your heart desires.

What are you going to be this Halloween?
